http://www.boost.org/tools/build/build_system.htm must be left over from a
previous version.

I'm having a senior moment.
MSVCNT is set to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98 and bjam is invoked with "-sTOOLS=msvc" but the command line that gets invoked is C: \Program Files\Microsoft Visual C++\VC98\bin\cl and, of course I get: "The system cannot find the file specified."
Where's the instructions for compiling with VC6, SP4?
This is my command line (saved in a batch file): bjam -sTOOLS=msvc -sBUILD=release -sMSVC_ROOT=D:\msvs\VC98 -sVISUALC=D:\msvs\VC98 I don't think MSVCNT is used see http://www.boost.org/tools/build/msvc-tools.html -- P: Egad!
