Until I tried the history button they appear in alphabetical folder order which isn't so useful.
That's the Files view, showing the directory contents not the commits, so it's showing the files in alphabetical order. It happens to show the most recent commit to each file/dir on the right, but it's not the best way to look at commits. Either use the history button or switch to the Commits tab, above.
