Offering to help the author/maintainer with documentation for a particular library is probably the best thing you can do?

Asking questions (even if dumb) like "what is the function and usage of this feature?" and capturing the answer is valuable.

Also, take in mind that for many developers English is a second language.

Technical documentation is not easy to write in a language you master, harder when you don't master it.
